Yajima was born in Yamanashi in 1981, which is a suburban area near Tokyo. The photo book Ourselves compiles her works between 2010 and 2015.
Anyone born in the Kanto area (a suburban area around Tokyo) in the 80s has been through many moments of the dynamic change of the megalopolis as it moves into the next century, and felt the transition of the physical texture of the world. In this highly developed society all lives, relationships and, feelings have become suburban-ized. Ourselves observes and visualizes this specific absence of temperature and feeling of disquiet through the medium of photography.
Born in 1981 and presently based in Tokyo, Yajima received an award at the first “1_WALL” photo exhibition in 2009 and a July Prize at the Tokyo Frontline Photo Award in 2013. Main exhibition include the solo shows “Ourselves / 1981” (2015, G/P Gallery, Tokyo) and “PORTRAIT” (2013, Gallery 916 small, Tokyo) and “A place in the cliff”（2011, TAP Gallery, Tokyo）and a lot of group exhibitions. Shortlisted at “Fotobook festival Dummy Award” (2013, Kassel ) and shortlisted at “Unseen Dummy Book Award” (2013, 2014, Amsterdam).
